about the project
“Chin Up, My Dear” tells the story of the close relationship between David, an aimless Gen Z’er, and his fiercely independent 85-year old Grandmother Ellie, as they spend the afternoon together. It’s a tough time for the pair - both are mourning the recent death of Ellie’s husband, Geoffrey. Ellie, resilient and stoic, carries on the
best she can while in deep grief, adjusting to a solitary life in her home while David struggles in the midst of relationship woes and mid-20’s angst. As David assists Ellie with some of her never-ending computer needs, Ellie inquires about the state of David’s relationship. He tries to explain, unsuccessfully, why his girlfriend,
Claire, seems unsatisfied with how he engages in life. When Ellie attempts to get a bag from her closet using a foot ladder, David forces the issue and insists on getting it for her. When retrieving the bag he accidentally spills the contents revealing an unsettling discovery.
