  • Jim - Men, 40-45, White - In need of a shave, some extra-strength Tylenol, and a breath mint. Not even trying to hide his failures from you anymore.

    • Director Notes: Make sure that Jim with Buddy and Jim without Buddy are two different people. Feel free to go on a journey of how much or how little you believe that Buddy is still there- help us understand that you don't know if you’re losing your mind or if he’s actually there. Lean towards the person who’s doing his best towards the end of the piece

  • Buddy - Boys, 8-12, White - His eyes look into yours with a million questions. Cool confidence, like a young savant counting cards in a casino.

  • Maria - Women, 40-50, BIPOC - Your one sick child is her thousandth... this year. And also her favorite. They all are. She likes you, too. She worries about you. She wonders if you ’re eating. We want to see her care for the whole family.​

    • Director Notes: She shows her care through attention, not mushiness. She's firm, kind, and always watching you and the kids she's treating

  • Panhandler - He’s nameless - you know the type. He's the type of uncle your mom won’t talk about anymore. He’s what Jim would be if he didn’t have Buddy.

    • Casting Note: they're looking for an unhoused Santa-type.
